D,L-Panthenol, also known as Pro-Vitamin B5, constitutes a stable racemic blend of D-Panthenol and L-Panthenol. DL-Panthenol is readily absorbed by the human body through the skin, where it undergoes swift conversion of D-Panthenol into Pantothenic Acid (Vitamin B5). Vitamin B5 is a natural component found in healthy hair and is present in all living cells. In terms of moisturization properties, such as enhanced hydration, reduced water loss, and the preservation of skin elasticity and softness, this racemic mixture is fully active. However, in the context of skin epithelization (wound healing), only D-Panthenol transforms into Vitamin B5, resulting in D,L-Panthenol having only half the physiological activity of D-Panthenol.
Research indicates that D-Panthenol promotes the stimulation of epithelization, granulation, alleviation of itching, and demonstrates an anti-inflammatory effect. Over a usage period of three to four weeks in formulations, it has the potential to enhance the skin's appearance, addressing concerns such as dryness, roughness, scaling, pruritus, and erythema.
