DL-Alpha Tocopheryl Acetate, also known as Vitamin E Acetate, is a stable form of Vitamin E widely utilized in cosmetic formulations for its skincare benefits. Vitamin E plays a crucial role in shielding cell membranes from damage caused by oxygen free radicals. It acts as a protective agent, helping to prevent premature aging of the skin induced by UV irradiation and lipid peroxidation.
Tocopherols and tocotrienols, the components of Vitamin E, efficiently scavenge lipid peroxyl free radicals, acting as chain-breaking antioxidants. This process is vital in limiting the propagation of lipid peroxidation in cell membranes. It's important to note that tocopherol may potentially act as a pro-oxidant in the absence of co-antioxidants like Vitamin C and under mild oxidative stress.
Natural Vitamin E can be prone to instability in skincare formulations, especially under UV irradiation. Alpha Tocopherol, the active form of Vitamin E, can rapidly convert to tocopheroxy radicals that consume other antioxidants. The use of Vitamin E Acetate, an ester of alpha tocopherol, helps overcome this limitation. Tocopheryl Acetate is biologically converted to vitamin E within the skin upon topical application. Studies indicate that the topical application of tocopherol and alpha tocopheryl acetate is more effective than dietary supplementation in increasing the vitamin E content of the skin.
Supported by numerous studies, Vitamin E Acetate has demonstrated the ability to increase enzyme activity in the skin, prevent free radical-induced skin damage, enhance the healing of surface wounds, and improve skin moisturization.
