Vitamin C, 100% L-Ascorbic Acid, FCC, Ultrafine powder, is a water-soluble antioxidant with exceptional properties. Vitamin C, or L-ascorbic acid, is a powerful naturally occurring antioxidant that plays a crucial role in preventing dry skin, reducing wrinkles, promoting collagen synthesis, and facilitating skin regeneration. Ascorbate is present in all layers of the skin, with a higher concentration in the epidermis than the dermis. However, exposure to UV light can deplete cutaneous tissue stores of ascorbate by about two-thirds.
Biochemically, the body relies on ascorbate in the collagen biosynthetic pathway, where it serves as a cofactor for two enzymes, lysyl and prolyl hydroxylases. These enzymes, dependent on iron, benefit from Vitamin C's ability to prevent iron oxidation, ensuring the sustained activity of hydroxylases and thereby maintaining collagen production.
The topical application of Vitamin C has demonstrated efficacy in reducing the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles, primarily through mechanisms that support collagen production, resulting in improved skin texture. Additionally, Vitamin C has been proven to lessen the severity of sunburns and age spots, further showcasing its dermatological benefits.
INCI: Ascorbic Acid.
HOW TO USE: The difficulty for the cosmetic formulator is that L-Ascorbic Acid is very unstable in aqueous solutions, as it starts to oxidize immediately, gradually producing color changes (orange/brown shift) and a reduction in activity as it converts to dehydroascorbic acid. For cosmetic use, it is best stabilized in an anhydrous lipid or silicone base, although some have reported increased stability with the use of Ferulic Acid as part of aqueous formulations. This product is an ultrafine powder, ready to use in anhydrous formulations without further grinding.
